Otters’ DeBrincat records third straight 100-point season
Ontario Hockey League

Chicago Blackhawks prospect Alex DeBrincat is the OHL’s first 100-point scorer of the 2016-17 season.

DeBrincat recorded a goal and two assists in Erie’s decisive 5-1 victory over the visiting London Knights on Wednesday as the Otters claimed their franchise record-tying 11th straight win. They now lead the Knights by four points atop the Western Conference standings.

The 19-year-old native of Farmington Hills, Mich. joins Dale McCourt (HAM/STC, 1974-77), Jim Fox (OTT, 1977-80), Wayne Groulx (SSM, 1981-85), Chris Taylor (LDN, 1989-92), Brett Seguin (OTT, 1989-92), Bill Bowler (WSR, 1992-95) and John Tavares (OSH/LDN, 2006-09) as the eighth player in the league’s modern era* to record three consecutive 100-point campaigns.

His first period goal was the 149th of his OHL career, putting him ahead of Patrick O’Sullivan (MISS, 2001-05) for the second most by an American player in OHL history behind Rob Schremp (154, MISS/LDN, 2002-06).

DeBrincat recently became the leading goal scorer in Erie Otters history and also eclipsed the 300-point plateau on his OHL career. He currently leads the league with 100 points including 47 goals and 53 assists in 48 games and has been a three-time Pioneer Energy OHL Player of the Week this season.

DeBrincat is currently on a 12-game point streak, recording at least three points in six of his last eight outings. He is just three goals away from becoming the second player in OHL history to register three straight 50-goal seasons.

Originally signed by the Otters as a free agent in April 2014, DeBrincat was a second round (39th overall) pick by the Chicago Blackhawks in the 2016 NHL Draft last summer.
