Buffalo, New York – The Erie Otters spread the offense around Friday night at the HarborCenter to down the Peterborough Petes 4-1 in their preseason exhibition opener.
The Otters controlled the pace of the first period from the drop of the puck with a few chances early before Mitchell Mendonca put Erie on the board first. Mendonca whacked home a rebound on the right post after an Alex Gritz shot that was stopped by the Petes netminder. As the period continued, the Otters kept pouring on shots finishing the frame outshooting Peterborough 17-7. The penalty kill unit got a workout early in the preseason as well, but appeared in midseason form by killing off a 5-on-3 disadvantage, as well as another minor penalty. Erie seemed poised to take the lead into the break but Nick Isaacson beat the clock with tenths of a second left to tie the game at one after the first period.
The second opened similar to the first with Erie pushing the pace, with that gaining a power play. On the ensuing face-off Cade Robinson found the disc and snapped it off the post and in to reclaim the Otters one goal lead. Troy Timpano protected the net from 11 shots on goal in the frame as Erie took a 2-1 lead into the intermission.
Erie continued the puck possession in the third period and were eventually rewarded when Patrick Fellows putting home an Ivan Lodnia helper as the Otters went up 3-1. The Otters would have to kill more penalty trouble in the frame, and finished the night 7/7 on the penalty kill. Peterborough would pull the goaltender late in attempt to begin the comeback, but Josh Wainman would find the bullseye from nearly 200 feet away to seal the deal as the empty netter pushed Erie ahead 4-1.
The Otters are back in action tomorrow night at 7:30 against the Flint Firebirds for day two of the OHL Preseason Showcase at the HarborCenter in Buffalo, New York. They’ll round out the weekend Sunday night against the Kitchener Rangers.
