Buffalo, New York – The Erie Otters and their special teams highlighted Saturday night’s action with a shorthanded goal and three power play goals to defeat the Flint Firebirds 4-3 on day two of the OHL Preseason Showcase at the HarborCenter in Buffalo, New York.
Erie continued the momentum from Friday night’s victory rolling into the early parts of the first when, despite being shorthanded, Patrick Fellows used an odd man rush to snap home the game’s opening tally to give the Otters the lead. That would be matched quickly on the same power play when Luke Kirwin tied things up for the Firebirds. Erie used a power play of their own later in the frame to reclaim the lead with Fellows once again finding pay dirt, this time knocking home a rebound from a Brendan Kischnick shot to put the Otters up 2-1. Anand Oberoi would stop 12 shots in the frame as Flint outshot Erie 13-11 on the frame.
The second period found the physicality continue from the first with teams battling to get open ice. Penalties also plagued the frame and it was the Otters who took advantage. Erie had a power play nearly midway through the period where Carson Edwardson snapped home a rebound found in the slot to put the Otters up 3-1, a lead they’d take into the intermission.
Flint came out determined in the third, tying the game at three in a matter of minutes. Erie once again used the power play to jump ahead, this time for good. Puck movement saw the Otters move it around and use a few rebounds to find Chad Yetman to burry home Erie’s third power play goal of the night, one that would stand as the game winner. Flint was unable to find the equalizer as both teams filled the box towards the end. Erie improves to 2-0 this preseason with three more games remaining in the exhibition schedule.
The Otters wrap up the OHL Preseason Showcase tomorrow night at 7:30 against the Kitchener Rangers at the HarborCenter in Buffalo, New York. Erie will return home before finishing their exhibition schedule with a pair of games against the London Knights.
