Greg Cowan / The Sun Times

Owen Sound, Ontario – The Erie Otters outshot the Owen Sound 36-26 but just couldn’t come up with the game tying goal in the third period as the Attack netted an empty net goal late for a 4-2 victory in game two of the weekend series between the teams.

Erie was skating in their third game in under 72 hours looking to claim fourth place in the Midwest Division with a win. Owen Sound had other ideas as Barret Kirwin opened the scoring in the first period at 4:38. The Attack added another goal in the frame with Deni Goure finding a loose puck in front of Daniel Murphy to rip home for a 2-0 lead. The Otters responded with their power play when Austen Swankler banging home a rebound from a point shot to cut the lead in half at the intermission 2-1.

The Otters kept pushing and poured 16 shots on Mack Guzda in the middle frame. Kirwin netting his second of the afternoon at 9:51. Erie found a response on the stick of Elias Cohen who stripped Mark Woolley of the puck at the Otters blue line and was off to the races, finishing the play on his backhand for his fifth goal of the season.

The deficit was one for the Otters heading into the third period after trading goals in the second. Erie fired another nine shots at the Owen Sound net but came up empty in the period. With the Murphy pulled for the extra attacker, the Otters sniffed the net, but ultimately came up short. Barret Kirwin would net the empty net goal for his third of the day with time running out on the clock to hand the Attack a 4-2 victory and sole possession of 7th place in the Western Conference playoff race.

Swankler scored a goal for a third straight game and netted his fourth goal during the streak. The Otters maintain a five-point lead on the Soo Greyhounds for the final playoff spot in the West.

Erie begins their league leading seventh three-games in three-days weekend of the season on Friday night in Guelph when the take on the Storm at 7:30 pm.
