Erie, Pennsylvania – Despite outshooting their opponents, the Erie Otters fell just short at home, falling 2-1 to the visiting Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds on Friday night.
The Soo jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on a goal from Tye Kartye at the 3:39 mark of the first period. The goal was Kartye’s 12th of the season and the lone assist was credited to Billy Constantinou.
The Greyhounds repeated their early goal scoring ways in the second period when Zack Trott put home his eighth goal of the season to put the Soo up 2-0. Ryan O’Rourke picked up the primary assist on the goal, while Constantinou earned the secondary assist, his second helper of the game, good enough to earn the Soo forward first star honors.
Erie would answer later on in the second on the man advantage when Jamie Drysdale put home a wicked wrister from the left faceoff circle for his sixth goal of the season. Picking up the assists on Drysdale’s power play goal were Maxim Golod for his 24th helper on the year and Chad Yetman for his 13th assist this season.
The goal for Drysdale continued his strong play as the Canadian forward gets set to leave for Team Canada’s World Junior Selection Camp in Toronto on Monday, as he is now up to eight points (1G, 7A) in his last five games.
With the assists, Golod is also up to six points (2G, 4A) in his last fives games, while Yetman now has 12 points (5G, 7A) in his last nine games.
In addition to their power play goal, the Otters also continued their strong special teams play on the penalty kill, holding the Greyhounds scoreless on two power play opportunities. Erie has now gone five games without allowing a power play goal and lead the league with an 86.4% penalty kill percentage.
Rounding out the three stars of the game after Constantinou was named first star were Jamie Drysdale as the second star, while Soo goaltender Bailey Brkin was announced as the third star, stopping 28 of 29 shots to pick up his sixth win of the season.
The Otters are back in action on Sunday afternoon in their last home game before the Christmas break, taking on the Sarnia String at 2pm at Erie Insurance Arena.
