Erie, Pennsylvania – For the first time in the 2021-22 season, the Erie Otters will host the Canadian Hockey League’s ‘Game of the Week’ on CHL TV – doing so in the team’s inaugural Martin Luther King Jr. Day Game against the Saginaw Spirit.
The game, being played at 2 P.M. on Monday, January 17 is a historic one for the Otters organization, and the Ontario and Canadian Hockey Leagues. Pennsylvania-native Alex Randall will don the Otters’ headset on CHL TV as the first Black Play-by-Play Broadcaster in the history of the leagues. Randall, a 2021 Scholarship Recipient from the Black Play-by-Play Fund, is a Junior at the University of Pittsburgh pursuing a career in Sports Broadcasting and will call the game in place of the Voice of the Otters Shawn Bednard.
“It’s an honor and a privilege to call this game. I’ve wanted to call hockey for most of my life, but never anticipated it happening so early in my life,” said Randall. “Hopefully I can pay it forward and introduce some new fans to the world of hockey.”
With the ‘Game of the Week’ honor, fans will be able to watch the CHL TV broadcast with Randall’s call completely free on Watch.CHL.ca. Joining Randall on the call is Otters’ Broadcast Assistant Erik Konwinski, a Senior at Gannon University. Konwinski, who serves as an Analyst for Otters home broadcasts, called his first OHL game on December 11 as the Play-by-Play voice of the Spirit on WSGW AM/FM.
“It is a tremendous honor for the Otters to host one of the CHL’s ‘Game of the Week’ broadcasts, and even more humbling to have it be with Alex’s historic call.” said Bednard. “Fans across hockey are in for a real treat with Alex’s excitement and Erik’s knowledge leading the broadcast.”
Erie has won two of five meetings against Saginaw this season, including an exciting penalty-shot overtime game-winning goal for the Otters’ 2021 home opener. The team also spoiled the Spirit home opener with a 4-2 win. Every game between the two teams has been decided by two goals or less.
This is the second ‘Game of the Week’ the Otters have played in this season; the previous one being Friday, January 7’s 3-2 win (SO) at the Kitchener Rangers.
The Otters organization is thrilled to welcome all hockey fans to their first free-taste of a game atmosphere at the Erie Insurance Arena this season on CHL TV.
