Erie, Pennsylvania – For the first time since the Opening Weekend of the Ontario Hockey League season, the Erie Otters played a full weekend series on the road. Much like that road trip for Erie, the Otters were unfortunately unable to come away with points.
Starting on Saturday night, the Otters found themselves in Owen Sound for two games, looking to play spoiler against the top team in the Midwest Division. However, the Attack had a different plan as they were able to down the Otters by multiple goals in both games (8-5, 6-3). Certainly not the weekend the Otters were looking for; however, the season is still young, and the ability to rebound on home ice will present itself next week.
These are the players that impacted the weekend:
THIRD STAR – SAM ALFANO (1G+2A)
Even after missing nearly a month with a non-COVID related illness, Forward Sam Alfano didn’t skip a beat in returning to the team. Alfano would start his weekend early, scoring a goal off a Brett Bressette pass that #33 would skate into the attacking zone and score in the first period Saturday. To close the weekend, Alfano would record two assists in Sunday’s game off goals from Bressette and Cameron Morton.
Since his return, Alfano has put up two goals and two assists – a massive return to a team looking for depth.
SECOND STAR – BRETT BRESSETTE (2G+2A)
Another weekend in the office for #89 as he keeps things going in this early season. Brett Bressette would start Saturday night off with two assists on goals from Sam Alfano and Spencer Sova, before having a goal for himself off assist from Sova and Christian Kyrou. Sunday would be no different for Bressette, as he would find the back of the net late into the game assisted by Alfano and Colby Saganiuk.
With points in both games this weekend, Bressette has grabbed at least a point in four-straight games. The dynamic scoring Forward now leads the team in goals (8) and is tied with Kyrou in points (21).
FIRST STAR – COLBY SAGANIUK (2G+2A)
Colby Saganiuk has really been a big part of the team’s scoring efforts of late, and this weekend continued that trend.
#71 started the weekend off right, retrieving his own deflected shot and drawing the opening goal in game one against the Attack on Saturday. Saganiuk would be a contributor in all three of Erie’s goals in Sunday’s game – first scoring on a power play, assisted by Liam Gilmartin and Spencer Sova, then assisting on the goals by Cameron Morton and Brett Bressette. After the weekend, the Centerman now sits third overall for the Otters in assists (11) and points (16).
A big home weekend for the Otters is due up, as Erie begins a homestretch that sees eight of their next 10 games at the EIA. The team will start by hosting the Saginaw Spirit on the first-ever Children’s Grief Awareness Night (pres. by Highmark Caring Place) on Friday night. Erie will then welcome the team from Canada’s Capital, the Ottawa 67’s, in for Office Tribute Night (pres. by Printing Concepts) with Kate Flannery (Meredith Palmer, The Office). A big weekend is ahead as the team looks to bounce back once again.
