Otters Select Strome

The Erie Otters of the Ontario Hockey League announced this morning that they have selected Toronto Marlboro Minor Midget AAA Center Dylan Strome with the 2nd overall pick in the 2013 OHL Priority Selection Draft being held today via the Internet and conference call, from the Springhill Suites Hotel, located at Interchange Rd, in Erie PA.

Strome, a 6-foot-2 and 170 pound center from Mississauga, Ontario, registered 65 goals and 78 assists for 142 points in 60 games during the 2012-13 season.

“Strome is the type of kid that possess’ high character, and leadership qualities,” said Otters General Manager Sherry Bassin. “He will help lead us to a championship, and is a great compliment for Connor McDavid.”  McDavid, the Otters #1 overall pick in 2012, and OHL rookie of the year, who also played in the Toronto Marlboros system spoke very highly of Strome saying “Dylan is great player and a nice kid.  He’s going to fit in well and help our team tremendously. I think the fans are really going to enjoy watching him play.”

OHL Central Scouting describes Strome as “one of the best playmakers in the draft.  Dylan can create offense in many different ways, he has the ability to get his teammates the puck in a very good position in all three zones of the ice, and especially in the offensive zone.  He uses his size and smarts very well down low, and protects the puck by using his body and always seems to have good positioning on the defender to take the puck to the net.”

Dylan is the younger brother of New York Islander draft pick Ryan Strome, who played in the OHL for four seasons (2008-2013) with the Barrie Colts and Niagara IceDogs, playing in 172 games and compiling 71 goals 130 assists for 201 points in his career.  Ryan currently plays in the AHL for the Bridgeport (CT.) Sound Tigers.

The Otters have 13 more picks in the selection process on Saturday including the 21st, 41st and 80th overall picks.

The Ottawa 67’s used the first overall pick in the Priority Selection to take forward Travis Konecny. The Peterborough Petes will have the third overall pick.  Windsor was slated to have the fourth pick, but that pick was taken away with sanctions sent down by the league late in 2012.  The new fourth pick will be Mississauga Steelheads, and Kingston will round out the top 5.
