9:20 a.m. – Good morning, everyone! After a quick rest, it’s right back to work from the rafters of Consol Energy Center. It should be a very exciting day for some of the Otters, as I expect some of our players to hear their names today.
9:29 a.m. – As you see, the links from last night are up top on this blog. Need to clear up a few entries on the front page so the press releases for selected Otters can be shown front and center.
9:34 a.m. – The draft should re-start at 10:00 a.m. sharp, with the Columbus Blue Jackets kicking things off. As far as posts go today, I’ll chime in on OHL players, funny happenings and of course, the Otters that are picked.
9:54 a.m. – Roll call completes as I return with coffees for myself and Dave from the Spitfires. Also met Keith Dotson from the Whalers up in press box. It’s his third straight draft. Draft resumes in a few minutes!
10:00 a.m. – Columbus is on the clock to begin round two!
10:05 a.m. – I lied. Jim Gregory has now put Columbus on the clock. The Blue Jackets select goaltender Oscar Dansk, who could be CHL-bound in Wednesday’s CHL Import Draft.
10:10 a.m. – The first OHLer of the day goes to the Leafs in the fifth spot of round two. Matt Finn from the Guelph Storm is an outstanding steal for the Leafs, who have bolstered their blue line with their top two picks.
10:13 a.m. – Another OHL defenseman off the board with Buffalo native Dylan Blujus from Brampton. Good offensive skills. He goes to the tenth pick in the second round to Tampa. Soon after, Mitchell Heard of Plymouth is selected by Colorado. He’s an OA candidate for the Whalers. In case you can’t tell, things are moving quickly.
10:15 a.m. – A third straight OHL player gone at Windsor-bound Pat Sieloff is chosen by Calgary with the 12th pick of the second round.
10:19 a.m. – A second Storm player is drafted, as Brock McGinn is selected by Carolina in the 16th slot of round two. Scott Kosmachuk later on could easily make it three Storm players in the second round.
10:25 a.m. – San Jose goes off the board with the 55th pick and drafts London’s Chris Tierney. Surprising especially with Dane Fox, Daniil Zharkov and Gemel Smith all on the board from the OHL.
10:28 a.m. – Round two ends in a brisk 23 minutes. We could be out of here early.
10:30 a.m. – Guess you can never have enough goaltending. Joonas Korpisalo opens the third round as he’s selected by Columbus to join Dansk and Sergei Bobrovsky.
10:32 a.m. – Our first Otter is off the board as Adam Pelech is a New York Islander with the 65th overall pick. Time to get to work.
10:40 a.m. – Release out and posted. A few more OHL players are gone as well. Another good showing so far today.
10:46 a.m. – OHLers continue to fly off the board. 14 chosen so far in rounds two and three. 25 total.
10:56 a.m. – Third round ends with Belleville’s Zharkov to Edmonton. 16 players in day two from the OHL. 27 after three rounds. Pittsburgh will kick off round four with Kitchener’s Matia Marcantuoni. 50 OHL players drafted is not out of the question today.
11:14 a.m. – Late in the fourth round, up to 32 OHL players selected. For those wondering about Adam, he did not attend the draft. A very nice moment for the Pelech family to have a third son drafted into the NHL.
11:21 a.m. – First time warning of the day goes to the Florida Panthers in the 114th spot. Florida takes a timeout, much to the chagrin of the fans.
11:29 a.m. – Round four is now over. Just seven OHL players are chosen, the total is at 34. NHL Central Scouting’s Chris Edwards takes over the podium to start round five.
11:51 a.m. – Late in round five, and five OHL players have been picked so far. Amazing how fast this draft has gone.
11:55 a.m. – Round five is now done. We’re going to have some nervous kids here in the next hour. 60 picks to go.
12:00 p.m. – Connor Brown goes to the Leafs to join his former teammate Greg McKegg! He’s selected in the sixth round, 156th overall. Leafs brass was around Erie a lot this season, so this is no surprise. Brownie could play for his hometown team. Not too shabby for a 13th round OHL pick, great for him and his family.
12:14 p.m. – The OHL count is at 45. That 50 mark is certainly reachable with 34 picks left.
12:18 p.m. – The sixth round is over. We’re in the home stretch, boys and girls. One more round to go.
12:20 p.m. – Gianluca Curcuruto is the 47th OHL player selected today as Columbus chooses him to begin the seventh round. Jim Gregory, who’s back at the podium, has trouble with the name.
12:29 p.m. – Former Erie Otter Brady Austin is selected in the seventh round by Buffalo. I’m really happy for him, he’s done a great job with Belleville.
12:36 p.m. – Final ten picks. Tense moments here. Still some good players left this late.
12:43 p.m. – Nick Ebert closes out the draft as Mr. Irrelevant. That’s a total of 49 players (well, 48 plus one [Sieloff hasn’t played in the OHL yet]) chosen this weekend from the Ontario Hockey League. Thanks for checking in with us this weekend!
